Hesperios Knit Library Artifact

Éire

In 1796, the Ulster linen manufacturers distributed spinning wheels to encourage linen manufacturing—6,000 wheels in one year alone. The effort was such that at one point nearly every household in Donegal had a wheel, though they were more often used for spinning wool rather than the linen for which they were intended. The wheels were small enough to be portable, and the women gathered at a different house each night to spin and card wool together, and to share stories, tea, and company.
