The classical Greek physicist Archimedes defined buoyancy as a relationship between forces: the weight of an object (one force) and the weight of the water in which it is immersed (another force). An object floats when the volume of the water it displaces weighs as much as the object. As a ship sits at harbor, the sea around its hull is straining to return to the space taken up by the hull, no matter if it is made from the great creaking pine of Archimedes’ time, or from the towering steel of ours. It is that tension that keeps the ship afloat.
